Exotic Ammo and Self Defense

There's a lot of discussion lately about exotic ammo. It seems every few months a new bullet design comes to market that promises to reshape self defense as we know it. Some companies go so far as to make the claim their contraption is the "last round you will ever need". But do these high-tech bullets really offer anything besides creative marketing hype?

Back in the 1980's I was a kid, but I was an avid shooter. A bullet came to market that turned the shooting world on its ear for a short time called the Glaser Safety Slug. The Glaser was touted as the most devastating bullet ever designed, but it was also marketed as the safest because it was designed to rapidly fragment if you missed the intended target and the bullet hit a wall, door, floor, or something similar.
